How to Clean Boxing Gloves: The Most Effective Way

You play a few rounds of boxing games or a good practice session; the gloves will start getting dirty. And in no time, it can turn as messy as a dustbin.
The dirt mainly comes from your sweat and external materials. However, to get rid of such stinky feeling and maintain healthy boxing, you need to quickly learn how to clean boxing gloves as well as disinfect and dry them.

Step 1: Take the Gloves Out from the Bag
Any boxer would put his gloves pair directly on their kits bag after a boxing game or practice session. And no sooner had you placed the gloves into the bag, the germs from your hands are transferred instantly to the gloves.
So, whenever you come back home, bring the gloves pair out from the kit bag. It will stop germs spreading elsewhere in the bag.
Note: If possible, don’t place the gloves in the bag after a match. Open-air won’t permit the germs to last long.
Step 2: Wiping the Gloves
Cleaning the gloves isn’t like washing any regular clothes. Since you might be using the gloves every other day, dry cleaning is a must. For this, you need to quickly wipe the interior of the glove using a wrap tissue or soft towel.
You will need to wrap your hand around the tissue or towel and put it inside the gloves for the wiping purpose. Move your hand to soak the sweating.
Step 3: Washing the Interior of the Glove
Once you have soaked up the maximum sweat from the interior, it’s time to clean and sanitize the inside.
Firstly, make a disinfectant by mixing half distilled water and half vinegar. We recommend you to use apple cider vinegar or regular white ones. You can also use professional disinfectants.
However, with the vinegar solution at hand, transform it quickly into a spray bottle. Now, spray it in the inside of the gloves.
Note: We discourage you from using Febreze since it doesn’t kill germs but adds a pleasant smell to the interior.
Step 4: Cleaning the Exterior of the Glove
Now spray the same vinegar solution on the outer side of the pair of gloves. A light mist spray should be okay to coat the gloves entirely. Now, wait for a few moments to permit the solution to work on the dirt and grime.
Finally, use a clean piece of clothing or towel to wipe out the entire vinegar coating carefully. In the process, the exterior of the glove will get rid of all the grime, sweat, and other external materials.
Step 5: Conditioning the Leather Gloves
Commonly, boxing gloves are made of high-quality leather. So, you must condition it to get a long-lasting performance. You may use essential oil or commercial conditioner to remove the dryness from the gloves’ exterior.
Use a circular motion and lint-free clothing to condition your gloves. It will keep the gloves shining and in tiptop state.
Drying the Boxing Gloves
The trapped moisture and sweat inside build up the germs. So, if somehow you can keep the boxing gloves dry, you can nullify all these germs build-up to keep your gloves clean.
There are several ways to dry the gloves. These are:
- Air drying: It’s the most natural way to dry your gloves. For this open up, the gloves pair as much as possible and fold back the wrist strap. Then, hang the gloves or put them in a well-ventilated place.
- Newspaper stuffing: This is another traditional way to fast-drying any moisturized material. Make a ball shape with the crinkled-up newspaper sheets ad insert it into the gloves. The newspaper will not only soak the extra moisture but also keep the gloves open so that air can flow. This will quicken the total drying process.
You may need to repeat the newspaper stuffing process several times. In this case, you should replace the newspaper balls whenever it becomes saturated with sweat and moisture. - Blow dryer method: You can use a blow dryer for quick drying of the gloves. It is particularly recommended if you have multiple practice sessions or fights within a relatively short time. As you use the blow dryer, keep it in a cool setting. The heat may damage the leather.
These are the three best ways to dry your boxing gloves successfully. However, remember that you should never put the gloves under the direct sunlight. Since most gloves’ exterior is made of leather, so too much exposure to sun rays will dry up the leather and end up damaging it.
Adding Smell to Your Boxing Gloves
As you clean and dry your boxing gloves, why not adding some pleasant smell to it? You can sprinkle few pinches of a universal deodorizer, aka, baking soda inside the gloves.
Then, let the baking soda sit for a few hours. After that, bang the gloves to remove the baking soda. In the process, your gloves will get rid of the stinky feeling. Now using a cotton bud or socks, apply some cedar chips inside the gloves. It will add a soothing smell to the gloves inside.
Alternatively, you can use your favorite essential oils.
